AIDS Spreading - Weak marriages

The MercedSun-Star reported on a growing HIV threat among migrant farm workers coming to California from Mexico. The story centered around a wife whose husband died from the AIDS virus and she herself contracted it from him.

Men leaving their homes to provide a better ‘life’ for their families only put them in grave danger of an early grave. Instead of a new life the spouse shares in a devastating disease. Her sons work in a canning factor and left to care for her without hope of returning home to Mexico.

In “The Next Marriage Expansion” I wrote about a man who married two bisexual women in the Netherlands. On commenter wrote in response to the article:

Are heterosexual marriages really above reproach?

Part of my response was:

The fact that many marriages are weak doesn???t mean we expand marriage but rather help people deal with the issues in the context of one man, one woman.

The point the commenter made recognizes that traditional marriages are often not above reproach. There are larger consequences when this happens, but certainly the devastation to the spouse and children shouldn’t be lost on anyone. A marriage of one man and one women is only that when both spouses maintain their mutual commitment to not bring anything or anyone that would harm that relationship.

On a cultural level for the nation, there is a growing cost to all families.

“There are probably some people who will be saying that we shouldn’t be paying for (treating) the undocumented,” said Sandoval. But from a public health perspective, immigration status is beside the point, he said.

There are limited resources. Every dollar requires a tax on someone and in the end families bear the burden for it all. The increase of immorality will lead to more situations like this. What will be the cost if the situation becomes as frequent as it is in Africa. Despite efforts the HIV/AIDS figures reached the highest levels with over 40.3 million people. Sadly, in one generation the rates could be dramatically reduced simply by moral behavior individually and in the context of one man, one woman marriage.
