Having Worked The Election - Ohio Results
November 9, 2005 |
While everyone else was happy blogging the elections, some of us and our counter-parts across the isle were moderately busy at the polls. I doubt that anytime soon will we be allowed to blog from our stations
. It was interesting how my counter-part really felt that the issues would pass overwhelmingly because of the anger toward Governor Taft (he revealed this after our duties ended at the polls). Though I would not disagree with the anger issues the people of Ohio have with the Governor, I was certainly more optimistic about their impending doom. Having heard the numbers come across the radio, it was obvious that 2-5 were going down in flames my counter-parts’ opinion. It only goes to show you that anger doesn’t necessarily translate into votes on such issues, thankfully. It also didn’t hurt that the issues took 8 pages in the newspaper! Can you believe that several voters came in and were upset because the issues were sprung on them without notice! We see all sorts of things working the polls.
Working the polls has one BIG advantage that I had forgotten until I read BizzyBlog’s exit poll information from the night. Remember the exit polls from the race between George Bush and Hairy Kerry? Read them and have fun now that you know the truth about the real numbers!
ISSUE 1
Third Frontier and the fetal stem cell issues lurked in the back corners of issue 1. An issue the Governor tried to pass on its own merits and failed. So it was attached to a funding isue in hopes it would pass without comment. I thought that it should go down in flames and come back next year as just a funding issues. Little news about the link was really covered by the ‘right to life’ groups from what I was able to see. Many people were under the impression here that failure of the issue would result in a lost of funds. The county engineer where I live pushed for the failure of the issue though our county reaches around 30 million from the funding. The positive news was the funding still had a year to go. But the issue passed 54.06% to 45.94%.
ISSUE 2
The legislature took care of this issue prior to the election and went down in flames 63.47% to 36.53%.
ISSUE 3
Finance non-reform issue three died in its tracks by a 66.96% to 33.04%. People saw through the lies of this issue.
ISSUE 4
Mathematical drawing of the districts for more ‘competative’ races was mathematically eliminated by the votes in a tremendous trouncing of 69.78% to 30.22%. Chalk this one as a big victory for local representation regardless of one’s political party.
ISSUE 5
The kick Ken out issue was itself kicked in the head by the greatest margin of the night, losing 70.17% to 29.83%.
George Sores will have to wonder how well his money has been spent in Ohio before the next election.
