Touch screen voting was touchy

In the effort to update the voting systems around the state, the Diebold touch screen systems were introduced in 44 counties. A series of unfortunate events caused some very late starts and an all night count.

Our county has been using the optical scan system for a number of years. Not only is it fairly easy to use, but it leaves a paper trail which helped for the recount. The voter gets the opportunity to correct his ballot if he has made a mistake and can be reissued up to a third ballot (should they spoil their ballot). When they leave the poll they know that their ballot was counted and that it was voted correctly. I was dubious of the touch screen but will wait to hold final verdict until they manage to work out the problems. Until then, I wouldn’t be waiting in line to change. Oh yeah… the best part was that the count for the most part was over by around 9:00 pm.
