Tragic Loss - 1.5 pound ‘baby’ dies

Posted by Conservative Culture On December - 12 - 2005

MacKenzie Kesler weighed 1.5 pounds at birth. Out of the womb three months earlier there were soon complications. The child couldn’t breathe on her own and soon discovered that there was hemorrhaging in the lungs and brain. A tragic story but compounded by fact that the parents are ages 16 & 18. Despite the fact that this unmarried couple are torn over the death of the child it remains to be seen how this boyfriend - girlfriend will do after the shock wears off.

The ‘difficult’ decision’ to take the baby off an incubator is at the heart of the article in The Roanoke Times. Since the baby moved its home from the womb to an incubator, the child gained the privilege of having a name of being lamented over when she died. Push MacKenzie Grace Kesler back into the womb (say it was medically possible) and suddenlly the article’s title would be different. What title would you put? ["Crazed couple mourns fetal tissue"; Post abortion depression - how to overcome it"; NOW champions 2nd semester abortions and choice?]

I applaud the paper and people involved as portraying this child as real and valuable. MacKenzie’s death is tragic and something they will remember for the rest of their lives. I only wonder how this nation would be changed if every ‘fetal tissue’ was called a child with a name prior to birth.

Conservatives attack birthright citizenship

Posted by Conservative Culture On December - 12 - 2005

In late November there was a headline entiled “Inheritance At Stake.” We mentioned that Birthright citizenship changes were needed in light of illegal immigration.

December 11th’s San Antonio Express - News had a front page article entiled “‘Born in the USA’ may lose its luster.” The very next line says that the birthright citizenship was under attack by conservatives. It sounded as if exalted the fact that every child born on U.S. soil had been given even to undocumented immigrants. Would undocumented mean illegal?

The issue is how does the 14th Amendment apply to illegal’s. Are they subject to the jurisdiction of the United States. Yes and no. They shouldn’t be here and the law requires illegals to be deported. When it comes are legitimately subjects of to the jurisdiction has been misused and should not give automatic citizenship to the children of illegals. Obviously there is no problem for those here legally. Watch as this issues continues to be debated.

Potter devoured by Lion in Narnia

Posted by Conservative Culture On December - 12 - 2005

Katie Couric this morning mentioned Narnia and said something alluding to the ‘pop’ culture phenomenon. I don’t normally listen to her but she happend to be on in the background. My first thought is that she doesn’t really get the power of such stories like “Lord of the Rings” or “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Both carry powerful themes which are similar. It just happens that some of the symbolism is more vivid in Narnia.

Tolkien’s friendship with Lewis encouraged the writing of two classic book series. If all goes well both of these series will be found on the nearest shelves as classic DVD’s. This past weekend the first movie about Narnia took in 67 million dollars. It beat out Harry Potter this weekend though Potter had a better first weekend with 102 million dollars rake in.

Though Narnia has parallels to Lord of the Rings they are certainly different. Yet it was Lord of the Rings which paved the way for this movie. My family is looking forward to seeing it and hope that it does well enough that the entire series will be produced. Why? Because we have read both series and enjoyed them. So of course there was excitement when the movies came out.
