Blame it on the Monk - Parakeet that is

Parakeets or Power? That is the question facing residents in Hartford, Conn. when a women found utility crews tearing down the nearly 200 lb. nests built around utility polls and transformers. Her reaction was to begin yelling at the crews and standing under their nests.

These nests cause fires and blackouts according to the utility companies. But you know that big companies only want profits and to destroy all living things. So the sparks flew when bird lovers found out that the birds were being caged (animal slavery) and taken to be gassed (read nazi concentration camps for animals).

Forty years ago pet owners accidentally or deliberately released (freed the birds from bondage) into the wild. There are colonies in FLorida, the Northeast and other parts of the country. Originally from South America these community nests are rather noticable, especially when the power goes out this winter.

Meanwhile the uncompassionate on life support and worried about their ozone depleating energy have called the utility to see if the problem is being taken care of.

“We’ve gotten calls from people on life support, worried about these nests causing their power to go out,” he said. “They are on pins and needles.”

Thankfully concerns about the parakeets have been heard and the birds will be safe. The killing has stopped for this year. Unfortunately, compassion for the animals may risk a few lives. A few lives lost in the activists minds is worth helping keep America beautiful and safe for Birds like Paco.

Animal rights activists are calling the news a small victory. After protests that sometimes led to arrests, the group called Friends of Animals took their case to court today. The group believes it may have won its first battle in its war to save Monk parakeets. This is Paco. He has survived a local utility company’s efforts to get rid of South American parakeets who nest on utility poles like these… Paco is one of the lucky parrots who found a home in this West Haven Animal Clinic. Many of his kind have been captured and killed because their heavy nests cause power outages.

Be watching for power outages this winter. My only question to ask now is whether the transformers are safe for the birds. If not, then there could be lawsuits on behalf of the parakeets.
