It was simply a civics lesson. It began to turn ugly when an a neighbor questioned the legality. The stupidity spread when the City Administrator of Deluth agreed that it violated a graffiti ordinance.
The flag can be burned but not painted. It isn’t art but now graffiti. The Mayor jumps to the defense of the flag and happens to live in the neighborhood with the flag.
“This is a travesty of American justice, and I am totally embarrassed that they are in my neighborhood ??? in fact I will no longer consider Whitney Park part of Howell Woods,” Lasseter fumed in an e-mail to council members about those who oppose the painting. “I definitely agree they should come to council ??? let them show their nonpatriotic faces to us all.”
The city administrator whips off an email to the Mayor:
McLemore, in an e-mail to Lasseter, said: “You cannot pick and choose what religious and political symbols you want to allow or not allow on public property.
Some how the simplicity of a patriotic flag being painted being different from the “Hammer and Sickle” or the “Nazi Swastika”. Forrest Gump had it right. “Stupid is as stupid does.”
