Oxley aid fights local GOP Chairman
February 19, 2006 |
Last election Congressman Oxley won the district but he lost Allen County Ohio. Even though his opponent ran a negative campaign, Oxley lost Allen County to an outsider who rented just to be listed as a resident for the campaign.
Now Kelly Kirk, a longtime aide to U.S. Rep. Mike Oxley is setting herself up in a bid to oust one of the most successful Republican Chairmans. Most likely the move is sparked by the announcement that Oxley will retire meaning that his aid will try to do some political maneuvering.
Kirk filed this week to run against Cheney to represent Lima???s C Precinct in Ward 4. She said Thursday that she also plans to run this spring for chair of the party???s Executive Committee, the job Cheney has held since June 1994.
Chairman Keith Cheney has held the rains of a very successful Republican party in Allen County seeing clean sweeps in 2000, and 2004 elections.
???We had a clean sweep in 2000 and 2004,??? Cheney said. ???We???ve become more inclusive, we???ve built a volunteer base of more than 500, and we???ve been recognized by the Ohio Republican Party, Republican National Committee and President Bush for the work we???re doing.???
At the precinct level there is also lots of activity. Something which seem unusual is that several precincts are contested. Most likely those being contested are the result of the maneuvering by Oxley’s aid.
Allen County has 139 precincts; currently only 60 of those slots are filled with committee members. Eighty-four people are on the ballot, including 29 new names. Five seats, including Cheney???s, are contested. The other four seats are currently vacant.
It was noted that Kirk, an Allen County resident, was seen introducing a candidate in the county from Findley who is running against an Allen County Republican. Another interesting development is that Findley is attempting to replace Oxley with with its own candidate instead of Jim Jordan whose current district includes Allen County.
Though unlikely she will succeed in her bid, it is unusual enough that it has made front page news for two solid days.

[...] It was an ugly fight for the Allen County Republican Chairmanship. Yet the old fashioned grass roots political hay ended with a vote by the Central Committee. Kirk and her supporters lost the election big time. Especially as Kirk took on an absolutely negative tone. End of story? You might think. But the twist is that the tone has taken what one might readily describe as “Democratic” in nature. She and her supporters haven’t realized they lost. Or should I quote Al Gore about how the election was stolen? LIMA — The Allen County Board of Elections is investigating two men who ran for Republican precinct posts and voted from addresses at which they may not have resided….. [...]
