Let Them Eat Sand!

Thanks to Cal Thomas for the title. He relates the struggle against the Soviet Empire and how America made it their goal of reaching the moon by the end of the decade. Eight years later Neil was saying, “That’s one small step for a man; one giant leap for mankind.”

Forget the fact that the nationalization of the oil wells in the Middle East put up a “Fence” which has given total control of the oil field to a small number of non-democratic nations. Reminds me of the John Wayne movie where they have to fight to tear the fence down around the watering hole. But that is another story. Cal promotes the idea of winning independence from the oil terrorists in the Middle East. They sell us expensive oil and they use the money against us. They also know they have more pull now than they did during the 1970’s oil shortage… some remember those days.

It is going to take an enemy to break our oil addiction. The perfect enemy is the oil-producing states with a track record for funding terrorism and whose brand of religion produces young fanatics determined to destroy the West.

If we can get to the moon, virtually from scratch and in just eight years, we can become independent of the mullahs, ayatollahs, sheiks, imams and whackos like the president of Iran and assorted other world criminals who hate us and want to destroy us. This will call for strong leadership from President Bush and future presidents, regardless of party.

Cal also points out, correctly, that if we don’t do something we will be making our own rope.

If we are unwilling to “pay any price (and) bear any burden,” to again invoke JFK, we will sell our enemies the rope they will use to hang us (to invoke Lenin). Oil independence might also have the virtue of being easier and less costly than going to the moon.

Let’s have a slogan as Cal suggests. Something rally around. “Let them eat sand!”
