Wal-mart wants exclusive rights on all smiley faces

Posted by Conservative Culture On May - 9 - 2006

Wal-mart is taking legal action to have exclusive rights to use the yellow smiley face. This is despite two uncomfortable facts.

First, they did not invent the smiley face, and they are not pretending that they did.

Second, the smiley face was widely used well before Wal-mart started using it.

Wal-mart’s grounds for the claim to exclusive trademark rights, according to spokesman John Simley (not a misspelling), is that they have a “tremendous investment” in it and people associate it with them.

But that doesn’t give them exclusive rights to smiles any more than a “tremendous investment” in and close identification with Conservative Culture would give me exclusive rights to the word “blog.”

Border Patrol Betrays Minutemen

Posted by Conservative Culture On May - 9 - 2006

Can you believe this. Proof positive that either the organization at the top is unable to think, are more concerned with procedure than correct thinking or they want the border left unsecure.

While Minuteman civilian patrols are keeping an eye out for illegal border crossers, the U.S. Border Patrol is keeping an eye out for Minutemen — and telling the Mexican government where they are.

According to three documents on the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations Web site, the U.S. Border Patrol is to notify the Mexican government as to the location of Minutemen and other civilian border patrol groups when they participate in apprehending illegal immigrants — and if and when violence is used against border crossers.

A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the notification process, describing it as a standard procedure meant to reassure the Mexican government that migrants’ rights are being observed.

I agree with Wizbang on this one.

Our US Border Patrol, following orders from the US government, is in cahoots with the Mexican government to help more illegals cross our borders. The US Border Patrol is supposed to protect US borders from illegal crossings, not encourage them. I thought this issue couldn’t possibly get any more out of control. I was wrong.

If that is the case.. then we really are in trouble. Things are a foot and it will be interesting what is really going on behind the scenes.

How things have changed…

Posted by Conservative Culture On May - 9 - 2006

I would like to thank Conservative Culture for adding me to this site. I appreciate the opportunity to offer my thoughts on politics.

One thing you will learn as you read my posts in the future is that I am a voracious reader. While I focus on reading books written by conservative allies in this culture war, I sometimes study the opponents as well. I am presently reading Tip O’Neill’s 1984 memoirs, Man of the House. Before his service in the U.S. Congress, he served in the Massachusetts Statehouse. In 1948, he helped orchestrate the first Democratic takeover of that body in decades. His explanation of how he did it is fascinating:

We were also lucky that in 1948 just about everything was going our way. A right-to-work referendum was on the ballot that year, so the labor unions turned out their people in full force. There was also a referendum on abortion, which prompted the Church to take an unusually active role in the campaign. Between the unions and the Catholics, the percentage of Democrats who voted in that election was unusually high–and every Democrat who ran for any public office that year was a beneficiary. (From page 59.)

How times have changed! In our parents’ (or grandparents’) day, an abortion referendum on the ballot was sure to turn out the pro-life vote…and put the Democrats in office.

Welcome New Blog Author - Daniel J. Mount

Posted by Conservative Culture On May - 9 - 2006

I have asked Daniel J. Mount to join Conservative Culture. He has graciously accepted. I will let him introduce himself if he wishes. But this is just a bit he included about himself.

I am a conservative Christian active in the Richland County Republican Party and in my local pro-life group, Pro-Life Ohio.

He has commented frequently on articles relating to State Sen. Jim Jordan’s race for the 4th Congressional district. It is no surprise to readers of those comments that he supported Jordan’s race. So it should be no surprise that he is conservative by nature.

So we welcome him and look forward to his future posts.

ACLU Will Hate This One - Student Right To Wave Ol’Glory

Posted by Conservative Culture On May - 9 - 2006

Apparently a house bill to protect student’s rights to wear and wave ol’Glory is in the works.

Representative Walter Jones of North Carolina (3rd District) has introduced HR 5255, the American Flag Display Protection Act. Under the bill, schools that do not protect the right of a student to respectfully display the flag could lose federal funding. “The most important symbol of any nation is the national flag,” Jones said in introducing the bill. “Since ancient times, flags or banners have served to identify and unify groups of people, especially in times of war.”

According to Jones, a constituent in his district had asked him to draft a measure in response to illegal immigrants waving Mexican flags in American streets — and a Colorado school suspending several students for wearing U.S. Marine T-shirts or shirts with U.S. flags.

Jones says he sees a real need for this legislation. “I think that this country is in so much trouble from the illegal immigration to the attack on religious freedom in this country that I just felt that this was the right thing to do,” Jones shares.

Supporting these rights comes with some teeth.

HR 5255 would prohibit a school from receiving federal grants or contracts if it has a policy or practice that infringes on the rights of its students to display or wear the American flag in a respectful manner.

This is in response to reports that some American students, in response to the illegals, have worn ol’Glory and were told they couldn’t because it was flaunting the American flag in front of Mexican students. But I wonder what they thought happened when the flew the American flag upside down under the Mexican flag. But we live in an unpside down world right now. If anyone has more on this, please post comments.

Time For Time To Go

Posted by Conservative Culture On May - 9 - 2006

Atlas Shrugs has a nice little rant about Time Magazines 100 Leaders. It really wouldn’t be much of a loss if the magazine folded as all the regular Americans pulled their subscriptions. Meanwhile she has a pic of Jesse, Cindy and others in support of terror in NYC.

Top Photo: Jesse Jackson, Cindy Sheehan, Al Sharpton, Susan Sarandon marching in support of terror yesterday, NYC May you spend eternity living under Shariah law…

It appears that her use of the Fifth column is correct in this situation. We are now seeing the expansion of the fifth column within the United States and in the end it will harm us as a nation.

A fifth column is a group of people which clandestinely undermines a larger group to which it is expected to be loyal, such as a nation. The term originated with a 1936 radio address by Emilio Mola, a Nationalist general during the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War. As four of his army columns moved on Madrid, the general referred to his militant supporters within the capital as his “fifth column,” intent on undermining the Republican government from within.

The term is also used in reference to a population who are assumed to have loyalties to countries other than the one in which they reside, or who support some other nation in war efforts against the country they live in.

That seems to accurately represent the activist left in the nation. Time doesn’t represent conservative culture and certainly doesn’t present any positive heroes in this country such as the troops and the every day hard working American trying to make a positive difference.
