2008: George Allen for President?

Some have touted George Allen as the conservative alternative to Romney and McCain. Is he?

Allen on Abortion: Allen supports limiting abortion in cases of partial birth abortion and minors being transported across state lines. He has supported parental notification. However, on his website, he expresses his position and his accomplishments on other issues but (while listing accomplishments) expresses no position here. In a 2000 Vote Smart questionnaire response, Allen stated that abortions should be illegal after viability, thus indicating that they should be legal until that point. This would leave 98% of abortions legal. He also indicated in his response to the survey that he opposed public funding of abortions. But he also said that he believes abortions should be legal in cases of rape, incest, when the life of the mother is endangered, and in cases of ???gross fetal abnormality.???

On embryonic stem cell research, he stated that he falls somewhere between the Bush exception and an all-out embryo harvest. On Sunday Morning Talk with George Stephanopoulos on May 22, 2005, he stated: ???I do not want to be creating embryos simply for harvesting, nor do I want to allow cloning.??? When George S. replied, ???But if they were left over from fertility treatments, it???s OK to do the research on them,??? Allen said, ???Yes.???

In 2002, he voted against a Sam Brownback amendment to ban human cloning.

Allen on Traditional Marriage: I must confess, I don’t know much about where Allen In the Senate, he voted in favor of a bill that added sexual orientation to the Hate Crimes act.

My take on Allen: Allen is an unacceptable choice for conservatives.

Sad to hear that Sen. Allen is not as conservative as he attempts to come across. Appreciate your pointing out his inconsistencies. I realize we can not get everything we want in a candidate, but I do not want to end up with a McCain type candidate just because I insisted on perfect from candidates closer to my positions.

I think Allen would be somewhat better than McCain. I could foresee swallowing my concerns and voting for him over a truly bad candidate (especially if he adopts a more conservative position). However, it appears to me that he is far from being the quintessential ideal conservative candidate.

[...] (For substantiation, see previous posts on Allen, McCain, Romney, and Huckabee. Guiliani’s liberal views are so well known that I saw no need to comment further.) [...]

[...] Allen has “no plans to sell his Barr holdings.” In other words, he will continue to make money off the killing of the unborn while claiming to be pro-life. That’s just another reason to add to my list of reasons for pro-life advocates of why Allen is an unacceptable candidate for President. [...]

[...] Add this to my posts on why Allen, McCain, and Romney, are unacceptable candidates, and you will see why social conservatives will have no other option but to support Sen. Brownback or Gov. Huckabee when the time comes. Feedbacks on this entry via RSS 2.0 Please leave a Comment or discuss via Trackback! [...]

Your blog on former Senator Allen seems to be based in your personal feelings not fact. Senator Allen didn’t answer a question exactly as you wished so he must believe differently from you. I’m a Independent conservative originally from Virginia and I met then Governor Allen when I lived there. I was a delivery driver with no real political affiliations and he was Governor. He made time in his schedule to ask my opinion and discuss my views because he cares about the people he serves. He is a strong Reagan conservative that believes in the people of this country and the Constitution. Unfortunately, he lost his re-election bid due to the lies started by his opponent and is no longer a viable candidate. Mike Huckabee, whom you seem to support, has too lax a record on ILLEGAL immigration to be acceptable to true conservatives. Huckabee, like so many Republicans, seem to have a problem understanding the term ILLEGAL. People that are here illegally don’t have the rights he seems to believe they deserve.

I agree that debate over Allen is a moot point.

I would like to see a Reagan, but I am willing to settle for a Huckabee or a Brownback. I have come to terms with the fact that I will find at least one issue for any public figure on which we disagree. The moral issues are the clinchers for me.
