Bartsch Goes to Washington DC
June 2, 2006 |
Since his graduation Manuel Bartsch has now hit the DC trail in support of legislation. Nothing like the personal touch for this recent high school graduate (who happens to know English) and is ready to go to college. (hmmmm. I know the next article’s title).
Manuel Bartsch learned first hand Wednesday that he is not alone, but that there are many his age fighting to stay in the country.Less than a week after he graduated from Pandora-Gilboa High School, Bartsch traveled to Washington, D.C., to talk to elected officials about the pending DREAM (Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors) Act, which would allow Bartsch and others to stay here.
???I met a couple other people the same age,??? he said. ???It was pretty nifty. I???m not the only one in this situation. Their hopes are high just like mine.???
The bill would allow illegal immigrants??? children to stay and go to state universities if they have been in the U.S. for five consecutive years and finished high school here. Wednesday was set aside as a day for people to lobby for the act to their elected officials. Bartsch has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio, where he will study accounting.
Bartsch made the trip with his attorney David Leopold and Pandora-Gilboa school board member Noralu Kahle. This was Bartsch???s first time in Washington, D.C.
???It was amazing,??? he said, saying he saw the Capitol and White House. ???I sat in the Senate gallery and watched the debate on immigration.???
We will continue to keep you updated on Bartsch’s situation as it develops.
