Taylor elusive on Social Issues

Mary Taylor, GOP candidate for Auditor, campaigned as a 100% pro-life conservative in the primary. Now she is trying to moderate her position; witness this Plain Dealer story.

She essentially said that the issues conservatives care about are a distraction:

Republican state auditor candidate Mary Taylor agrees that her party???s attention to social issues, often referred to ???God, guns, and gays,??? distracts politicians from dealing with more pressing state issues.

???It???s a fair criticism,??? Taylor, a state representative from Green, told Plain Dealer editors and reporters Monday. “We have focused on some very polarizing issues.???

Also, she wouldn’t say whether she was more ideologically like Blackwell or Petro.

Although this stance merited the Plain Dealer’s laudatory term “candid,” this is the sort of candid opinion that casts a bucket of cold water on the enthusiasm of conservative grassroots volunteers.

This is the sound of a Republican afraid to be a Republican.

If she didn’t want to talk about social issues, and she really doesn’t have to given what she is running for, she should have told the interviewer that they should concentrate on what the state auditor does and how she’ll improve things

How about competence at her job?

Then she could the Republicans stealing money and taking payoffs.

We (the GOP) have a lot to atone for.

Mary Taylor never said she didn’t believe in conservative causes, she only agreed that they are controversial and do distract from issues like tax cuts, medicade and school funding. She didn’t say they weren’t important, just that they get more attention than other issues of importance.

And–here’s the important part–she implied that these causes weren’t as important to her as other things were. This is somewhat different from the impression that some groups mistakenly received of her candidacy.
