Blackwell Should not Quit

July 21, 2006 |

One Republican (and State of Ohio Blog Alliance blogger) has joined the Democrats’ call for Ken Blackwell to step down from his position as Ohio Secretary of State.

Democrats argue that Blackwell has a conflict of interest overseeing elections while being a candidate and should step down. (Where were they when Sherrod Brown was running?) Scott Pullins argues that if Blackwell calls the Democrats’ bluff and steps down, he will remove this as a campaign issue.

But this would be even more foolish than dropping the TEL was.

Why?

If Blackwell resigns, the Democrats will respond by saying that they were right, and Blackwell finally realized the truth of their arguments. Then they will print campaign literature repeating the charge that Blackwell stole the election in 2004 (as if it was in his power), and admitted guilt by resigning as Secretary of State.

Quitting his job would be the single most foolish move Blackwell could make at this time. Continued Republican calls for Blackwell to resign can only hurt his candidacy and raise the suspicion that those responsible do not have Blackwell’s best interests in mind.
