Time For One Last Gov. Taft Embarrassment: Carry Conceal
November 30, 2006 |
Taft has embarrassed every respectable Republican in Ohio. Taft has also been a major reason Republicans lost big in the state wide races. Judging by his actions one might think he was a democratic mole. Now he rears his true colors once again. Can’t this man just give it up and fade away? (Note: Strickland is pro gun? Where is he calling for support and a promise to sign the changes?)
COLUMBUS, Ohio - As he approaches his final weeks in office, Republican Gov. Bob Taft is locked in a showdown with members of his own party over changes to the state’s concealed weapons law.
Both the House and Senate passed legislation Wednesday that would wipe out local municipalities’ weapons bans and gun sales regulations. Taft’s objection to overriding local gun laws has been clear for months, spokesman Mark Rickel said, citing as an example Columbus’ assault weapons ban.
If the legislation comes to the governor, “the bill would be vetoed,” Rickel said.
The news disappointed Republican lawmakers who worked hard on the changes. House Speaker Jon Husted, R-Kettering, said he planned to discuss the issue with Taft. Husted didn’t speculate about whether he could muster the three-fifths majority needed to override a veto.
Taft’s announcement came as the House easily passed the bill 74-14 following an earlier vote by the Senate.
We should pass the changes and force Taft to sign it. If he veto’s we should work to override the veto. Not enough votes? There must be someway to put the pressure on anyone still close to him so that he gives in. The Dems fight but Republican Congressman-elect Jordan says it best.
“We can’t have local governments apply different standards when dealing with a constitutional right,” Jordan said.
If we only had more in office like Jordan the world would be a saner place. It is a shame Blackwell didn’t win. This piece of legislation would easily be signed. But thanks again Ohio for voting for more of the same.
