A turbulent time. Barely losing to President Carter I wonder what would the last part of the 70’s been like if Ford had won. We will never now but here is a man who after great turmoil in the Whitehouse was thrust into the Presidency.

Gerald R. Ford, who picked up the pieces of Richard Nixon’s scandal-shattered White House as the 38th and only unelected president in America’s history, has died, former first lady Betty Ford said Tuesday. He was 93.

“My family joins me in sharing the difficult news that Gerald Ford, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather has passed away at 93 years of age,” Mrs. Ford said in a brief statement issued from her husband’s office in Rancho Mirage. “His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country.”

He was the first President whoever served without having been elected either President or Vice-President.

Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr. (July 14, 1913–December 26, 2006^[1]) was the 38th President (1974–1977) and 40th Vice President of the United States (1973–1974). He was the first person appointed to the Vice-Presidency under the terms of the 25th Amendment; and, upon succession to the presidency, he became the only president in U.S. history to fill that office without having been elected either President or Vice-President. He was also the longest-lived United States president, having surpassed Ronald Reagan’s record on November 12, 2006.

War with Ethiopia and Somalia are not new. Somalia has wanted the dream of Greater Somalia. However when I saw Ethiopia pushing back and putting into retreat the jihadist government a part of me was cheering.

Ethiopian fighter jets bombed Mogadishu International Airport in the middle of Somalia’s capital on Monday, witnesses said, in the first direct attack on the headquarters of an Islamic movement attempting to wrest power from the internationally recognized government.

An Associated Press reporter who arrived shortly after the strike saw one wounded woman taken away. There were reports of two people killed. The runway and one building used by the Islamic forces were damaged. Islamic officials were not immediately available for comment.

Ethiopia’s prime minister announced Sunday night that his country was ‘forced to enter a war’ with Somalia’s Council of Islamic Courts after the group declared holy war on Ethiopia.

The Russian-made jets swept low over the capital at midmorning, dropping two bombs on Somalia’s main airport, which just recently reopened after the Islamic takeover of Mogadishu.

Somali troops, backed by Ethiopian soldiers, captured a key border town early Monday and residents celebrated as government soldiers moved through the town and headed south in pursuit of fleeing Islamic militiamen, a Somali officer said.

This time however it appears the jihadist movement in Somalia are moving to take over power of the country. Somalia however is being backed by Ethiopia after the Islamic Court declared war on Ethiopia itself. Another sign of the intent of the jihadists to gain political and military rule in other countries and their ultimate danger to neighboring countries. The irony is that Russian made jets did the attack. Probably as well. Could you imagine headlines here if American made jets did it?
