It’s agreed the chapel is a sacred place for students, alumni and staff… But the cross has to go to make the chapel more welcoming to students of all faiths. Yeah…. So the the cross must go. The charter of William and Mary’s Charter is now over.

Both men agree the chapel is a sacred space meaningful to students, alumni, faculty and staff who use it for secular school events — starting with freshman orientation programs — as well as weddings and religious services. They clash, though, over what to do with an unadorned, 18-inch brass cross that had been displayed on the altar since about 1940.

Nichol unexpectedly created a ruckus in October when he ordered the cross removed to make the chapel more welcoming to students of all faiths. Previously, the cross could be removed by request; now it can be returned by request.

“It’s the right thing to do to make sure that this campus is open and welcoming to everyone,” Nichol said in an interview. “This is a diverse institution religiously, and we want it to become even more diverse.”

Certainly it appears that the college itself is ashamed of one key element.

1Cor. 1:18   For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Concerned Women for America had this to say.

Regrettably, the search for “morality and truth” in human wisdom and outside of the “power of divine Providence,” is doomed to failure. The counsel of the W & M president contrasts sharply with that of the Apostle Paul, who warned about relying on human (worldly) wisdom and who placed a different perspective on human transformation (emphasis added):

Christ…[sent me] to preach the gospel — not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Corinthians 1:17,18)

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is — His good pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)

President Sullivan’s remarks were somewhat at odds with the college’s rich Christian tradition, which remains in evidence on the campus. William and Mary — the second oldest college in America — was founded by the Anglican Church in 1692, and its original Charter and Statutes state that the college was established in order that: “the Youth may be piously enacted in good letters and manners and that the Christian faith may be propagated … to the glory of Almighty God.”

Until 1870, nearly all of the 246 colleges established in America were founded by various Christian denominations for the expressed purpose of training men in the “religion of Jesus Christ.” Today, graduates from the great majority of universities will hear messages that ignore their historical roots and reflect a commitment to “diversity” and secularism.

Its original purpose now abandoned its chapel now stand stark naked of its core message. It has become the chapel of the UN… empty and a shell of secular religion.
