Georgia: Guns in cars a good idea
February 20, 2007 |
Imagine the Georgia passing a permit for people to carry a concealed gun in the car without a permit. Typical lib opinions are raging over this possibility. For example.
The Georgia House has passed a bill by a vote of 138-38 allowing concealed firearms in a car without a concealed weapons permit. The bill is expected to pass in the state Senate.
Drivers without a concealed weapons permit already can carry a gun, but it has to be fully exposed, in a glove box or other compartment so that police can either see a gun or see the driver reach into a compartment, and therefore be on guard.
This bill would allow a gun to be tucked under a seat or some other convenient area without the driver needing a permit to do so, and thus without fear of the law.
This doesn’t seem to worry most of our legislature, people who honor the concept of the heroic man defending his family against violent thugs who prowl the night, jacking cars and swarming minivans full of day care children. But it scares me. I don’t trust people on the road, where emotions can ride high.
This bill would increase the possibility of road-rage situations turning into shooting matches, when normally they wouldn’t go beyond obscene gestures and mean, aggressive driving.
Also, there’s the police, who can’t sanely endorse this. Being pulled over is a high-stress moment, and this bill makes it more likely that people being pulled over by police are packing serious heat in close reach. A possible result? More dead police officers.
Every pullover is a tense moment for the officer. You think that the law abiding citizen is a threat? Do you think that the violent non law abiding citizen really cares whether they can carry legally or not? Who does this law affect? Only the person who wants to obey the law. It now allows them to be on the road with less fear than before knowing if they are in danger they will now be able to defend themselves. The problem people have already been doing this for some time. Stop with the platitudes and give the real information.
