Sec. of State Brunner a bag of mixed signals

Posted by Conservative Culture On March - 28 - 2007

Brunner has done something that will jeopardize the election process in Ohio for many years to come. Important codes will be emailed out! That’s like crying… “STEAL ME”.

When Ken Blackwell was Secretary of State, all county board of elections that used electronic Diebold machines were required to mail their access cards to the SoS office. Their IT staff would program the keys with the required codes and create an inventory of those codes on a separate sheet of paper. The SoS field staff was called into the office to sign for the cards and the codes, which were in separate, sealed packages. Then the staff hand-delivered the packages to the individual counties, and one person of each political party had to sign paper saying they received the package. It was somewhat of a long process, but it was to ensure that the codes were kept safe.

But now, in this new directive from Brunner, counties have 3 options of how to receive the access code, and one of them allows the code to be EMAILED to the counties! And since Brunner’s office was stupid enough to post this directive online, anyone wanting to find the code now knows that the county board of election’s email inbox could include the code. In addition, the directive includes the code for training machines, which is the default code for Diebold voting machines.

All of these liberal voting rights groups should be outraged that Jennifer Brunner would be so uncareful with Diebold codes and then announce to the world that the codes will be emailed out. Brunner is possibly opening the door to serious voter fraud.

On the other hand she is attempting to clean house in Cuyahoga County… a hot bead of incompetence.

Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner asked for the resignation of all four Cuyahoga County elections board members Sunday evening. She will move to fire them if they don’t agree to leave by the close of business on Wednesday.

Brunner said the two Democrats, Edward Coaxum and Loree Soggs, have agreed to resign. Republicans Sally Florkiewicz and board Chairman Bob Bennett have not.

She said she decided ask the board to resign after a Cuyahoga County judge sentenced two board of elections workers to 18 months in prison for rigging a recount of the 2004 presidential election. A year and a half behind bars is the maximum punishment allowed by law.

Brunner said she doesn’t hold the board members directly responsible for actions of the two workers but believes they bear some responsibility.

Now on the other hand the new culture of no corruption and ethics doesn’t seem to be catching on.

Bill Sloat broke the story today here.

On this page of Seretary of State Jennifer Brunner’s official website, her office didn’t even bother to remove her campaign header from various documents which urge people to vote for her! This is clearly unethical, as it is using taxpayer money and her offical website to promote her campaign.

Brunner is already proving to be a mixed bag and I just wonder what this will hold for the 2008 election. I don’t expect much and perhaps that will help ease the pain of watching this office.
