Breaux of Louisiana Won’t [Can't] Run
April 17, 2007 |
Update: Hat Tip back to Bizzy Blog on this one. It looks like the former US Sen. John Breaux may take up farming when he heads home. At least he should because he has the biggest load of chicken manure to spread around. What is it… He decided against entering…. Heck he can even enter in the first place. At least no legally. Then he says he won’t run because his running would only be about his eligibility to run. People who would vote for him deserve men like Breaux who supposedly once took the oath to defend and protect and uphold the Constitution of the United States.
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Former U.S. Sen. John Breaux decided against entering the Louisiana governor’s race Friday, hours after the state’s attorney general declined to rule on whether he was eligible for the post after having moved to Maryland.
“I said I would be guided by the attorney general’s opinion, and therefore will not be a candidate for governor,” said the Democrat, who represented Louisiana for 32 years in Congress.
Earlier in the day, Attorney General Charles Foti said a court should rule on the question of whether Breaux was eligible to run in the Oct. 20 primary.
At issue was a requirement of the Louisiana constitution that requires candidates for statewide elected office be a “citizen” of the state for “at least the preceding five years.” Breaux has been a Maryland resident since 2005.
“For me to run now means that we would face a campaign based on an eligibility to run, with the prospects of being in a courtroom only weeks before the election,” Breaux said in a statement. “That is not in the best interest of our state or what this election should be about.”
