Drive By Media Matters – “Magic Negro” and Secret Service

By Conservative Culture

The song says it all… It is humorous because it exposes the double standard of the left. When Rush said that perhaps Obama needed Secret Service because of Clinton Inc. he did it knowing his comments drive the Drive By Media. And it did…. from Media Matters (truth doesn’t matter… lol)

Limbaugh suggested Obama needs Secret Service protection because of “Clinton Inc.”
On the May 7 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh defended his “Barack, The Magic Negro” song – a parody mocking 2008 Democratic presidential hopeful and Sen. Barack Obama (IL) — and said, in response to reports about the controversy this parody has generated: “If I were to think about Barack Obama being in any trouble — needing Secret Service — I would look to Clinton Inc. before I looked at me. Try that, drive-by media. Get that out there.”
They just don’t get it… Perhaps it would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic. Using Big Al’s own words… and they still don’t get it. I can’t take it. Well… yes I can.

["Barack the Magic Negro" lyrics]

SHANKLIN (Sharpton impersonator): Barack the Magic Negro lives in D.C.

The L.A. Times, they called him that

‘Cause he’s not authentic like me.

Yeah, the guy from the L.A. paper

Said he makes guilty whites feel good

They’ll vote for him, and not for me

‘Cause he’s not from the hood.

See, real black men, like Snoop Dog,

Or me, or Farrakhan

Have talked the talk, and walked the walk.

Not come in late and won!

[refrain] Oh, Barack the Magic Negro, lives in D.C.

The L.A. Times, they called him that

‘Cause he’s black, but not authentically.

Oh, Barack the Magic Negro, lives in D.C.

The L.A. Times, they called him that

‘Cause he’s black, but not authentically.

Some say Barack’s “articulate”

And bright and new and “clean.”

The media sure loves this guy,

A white interloper’s dream!

But, when you vote for president,

Watch out, and don’t be fooled!

Don’t vote the Magic Negro in –

‘Cause — ’cause I won’t have nothing after all these years of sacrifice

And I won’t get justice. This is about justice. This isn’t about me, it’s about justice.

It’s about buffet. I don’t have no buffet and there won’t be any church contributions,

And there’ll be no cash in the collection plate.

There ain’t gonna be no cash money, no walkin’ around money, no phoning money.

Now, Barack going to come in here and –

    Amazing. I love this parody.

I think this song is hilarious, but I do think it’s also a big immature and not at all classy. For one, I do think a lot of whites vote Obama because of guilt, but second, I do think those kinds of white people are far and few between.

    But, yay politics!!

I think we need a song called “Rush, that Magic Moron, lives in idiocracy!”

    It would be much funnier.

You said a lot of whites vote Obama because of guilt, and then that those whites are few and far between.

    LOL, failure.

  4. What exactly is this a parody of? Isn’t it just racist?

  5. Alex

Maybe before you spout racism you should inform yourself. The parody was formed from comments made in the following LA Times article.

    http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/la-oe-ehrenstein19mar19,0,5335087.story?coll=la-opinion-center

This entire election has become about political reparations instead of ability, knowledge, and experience.

Be informed before following the masses of bind media-beliving sheep off a cliff.

I love this song. By the way, unlike a lot of the people commenting here, I actually like Rush and Hannady.

This is a parody of the childrens’ song “Puff the Magic Dragon” and came to be out of an L.A. times article.

That LA times op. ed. was written by of all people, a Jew. We all know how they feel about blacks.

This is not “conservative culture”- its racist clap trap.

This song is not good satire. To fit into that category, it would need to be a lot more carefully crafted. Some of the lines don’t even scan. I have not heard the song performed. Have only read the lyrics. I suppose the singer (who I understand is supposed to be an Al Sharpton impersonator) does not even attempt to sing the last six lines. My guess is that he just shouts them, because it would be impossible to make these unmetrical lines fit the suggested tune.

  11. WD40

Some comments on the comments: Seth says he likes Hannady. Then maybe he ought to learn how to spell the man’s name. It’s Hannity. And Brassy says we all know how Jews feel about Blacks. Really?

  12. MinLA

Brassy is obviously wrong or not intelligent enough to understand that the LA Times piece was written based on factual events. The reporter is neither negative or positive as an indictor of his preference or lack of, for Obama.

I am amazed, AMAZED, that this crap is out there circulating as high up as it is – and the RNC isn’t running for cover trying to distance themselves. Instead they are mailing it out with their Christmas cards!

Parody is one of the oldest and oft-used methods of criticizing politicians and government. It is the very thing what the authorss of the Constitution were protecting when they wrote the beautiful First Amendment.

However, just because you CAN doesn’t mean you SHOULD. This song and its emergence from the top end of the Republican party is embarrassing.

Nothing funnier than a bunch of old white men trying to sound young and hip. Oh, wait, that wasn’t supposed to be the funny part?

  16. Inform Yourself

The author of the LA Times article who wrote about ‘Barack the Magic Negro’ originally is Black, not Jewish, despite his last name. Get your facts. Read the article (where he discusses his last name). You will likely have a different opinion about this if you actually read the article.

Well, Obama certainly wouldn’t have won if not for all the money and media support, he wasn’t qualified. I think it is wonderful to have an African American president, but it is not wonderful to have a president who isn’t qualified. Before I heard the term “magic negro” I thought that liberal guilt put this man in office. Liberal guilt is certainly a topic to explore. It is always so interesting to look at liberals like Al Gore who have obscene electric bills yet are out there pushing “green living.” Practice what you preach, hypocrites, or shut up. Oh, yes, says the liberal socialite, I voted for OBAMA, yet they wouldn’t be caught dead even saying a kind hello back to a poor African American on the street. I think the heat need to go on Liberal hypocrites, there are so many of them. Here is a challenge to Liberals and Conservatives-Walk the walk. Be authentic. God is watching you….

What a sorry way for the right wingnuts to deal with their humiliation at losing to an inferior. I sort of feel sorry for them. If they’re not better than black people anymore, who’s left to be better than? Oh right, the gays …. guess I won’t feel sorry for them after all.

Brassy — you said “That LA times op. ed. was written by of all people, a Jew. We all know how they feel about blacks.”

Umm, the L.A. Times Op Ed was written by a black Jew. I guess you’re saying the guy is self-hating by implication then, eh? (He does allude to this in his op ed. . .)

    #87100
  22. Hey Brassy

The LA Times article was written by a black man with a Jewish-sounding last name. If you actually read the article, you would know this.

At the time the article came out, lots of blacks were criticizing Obama. Stanley Crouch, for example, wrote an article saying that Obama is not “Black like me”. But then, it became obvious Obama was going to win and they all shut up. The point is that this song is a parody of what liberals themselves (especially black liberals) were saying back when Hillary was still “inevitable”!

  23. Spencer Hayes

Regardless of how you feel about Barack Obama as a man or as our future president, it’s impossible to view this “parody” as anything but blatant propaganda and racism.

You can shoo away that comment with the typical buzzwords, “media”"sheep”"liberal” etc but that has nothing to do with this.

The word “negro” has become a derogetory term and it is used in this manner on purpose to demean the man who will soon be our president.

I don’t care where the inspiration for this came from or the platform it was presented, all of those are irrelevant because the bottom line is this is not an appropriate song and is not intended to be a joke.

Anyone who perceives this as humor clearly shares the view of the song and is not a subjective critic.

    #87102
  24. Thank you Spencer Hayes for your comment. Ok. It’s racist. Now write Al Sharpton and tell him that.

    Liberals… geesz.

I think its not only not funny but tasteless. I wouldnt say racist, just poorly built all together. This kinda song makes all americans look bad IMO.

I can’t believe this is what the fuss is all about. This is not even good satire. It’s just stupid. But Chip is even stupider for thinking it funny or in good taste to include it in a gift. Try again. There are many things about Obama that can be made fun of; this is just ridiculous.

Oooh! Oooh! Have I missed something? Is there a genuine Recognized U.S.A. Authority that sets The Standards and issues a Bona Fida Certificate of Ethnic Authenticity? If not, perhaps, to acknowledge those who feel the need, the new administration could create an official on-line, generic, fill-in document (complete with image of the Presidential Seal and suitable for framing) and let the rest of us just get on with it, w/o emphasis on race, gender, sexual orientation, ________(your choice), etc.

Jeez, I’m not even a phoney Republican and I do not see the issue here. We are going to piss and moan about a free speech parody? How will this destroy the phony Republicans? The people who will find this material offensive would never vote for the phony Republicans anyhow. Besides, black people understand that they are far more racists than whites. The difference being that whites are in power and that leaves the perception of whites being more so.

    #87118
  32. BSK

First off, the author of the original article is both black and Jewish (he is multi-racial). I don’t know whether any of that “matters” to people or whether it should, but it is important to have the facts straight.

Secondly, the concept of the “mythic negro” is an archetype utilized in much literature and film that is currently recognized and decried as being racist. Naturally, many African-Americans and other People of Color (POCs) took part in bringing these characters to life in film, but that does not make the existence of such types of characters appropriate. The concept of a POC sanitized of all elements of his/her culture except those that are appeasing to whites is inherently racist. It implies that whites will only accept POCs who conform to their own idea of what is right and inherently relegates non-white cultures to second-class citizenry. While I believe that the author of the original article used the term because he genuinely felt that Obama’s candidacy was predicated more on white America’s acceptance of him as a “magical negro” and less on his merits, this does not lend legitimacy to the term. There are far better ways to articulate this argument, if one feels this way. To hide behind the, “Well, a black guy said it” defense does not make it any less racist.

Third, by implying that Obama does fit the stereotype/archetype of the “magical negro” is unfair. It assumes that white America would ONLY accept a POC under these conditions and, therefore, any POC who is accepted by white America must fit this caricature. Is it impossible to accept that Obama garnered support in the white community because of a belief in his ability and acceptance of his stance on policy?

I’m sure that people voted for a myriad of reasons, include some who probably did so to appease white guilt and because he was a POC that they were “comfortable” with. This does not make this line of thinking accurate or appropriate nor does is undermine Obama’s legitimacy as a candidate. The character of the “magical negro”, be it a literary one or a social construct to help white people get over their racial guilt or make sense of their aversion to “black” culture, is an inherently racist one. To invoke it in a thoughtful discussion of Obama’s candidacy is tenuous at best. To use it in a blatantly racist song that is clearly intended to identify with white racists who are unwilling to accept an Obama presidency and whom many Republicans are actively recruiting for future campaigns is tasteless and racist.

Say goodbye to the minority vote–you can include Hispanics and Asians in that group. You could yawn at that, I suppose, but we’re talking about 1/3 of Americans who won’t vote for the GOP because it truly is turning into the party of White Southern men.

What makes me laugh the most is that commentators like Rush Limbaugh warn about Democrats destroying this country. GW Bush, Dick Cheney and the GOP leadership have done that in record time and with enough force that we are in about the worst shape economically since the Great Depression. Let’s not talk about Iraq–the country that will eventually fall into outright civil war–or Afghanistan, the country that we should have controlled and contained. Let’s ignore the growth of Al Qaeda.

Hell, let’s just put our head in the sand and be racist.

Laugh all you want about Obama. But if he fails, then we all fail. Including your children.
