DOJ Reports Myths about Compean and Ramos
July 6, 2007 |
The DOJ has this report (pdf) on the two jailed agents defending their prosecution of Border Agents (Ignacio) Ramos and (Jose Alonso) Compean. Everything we have reported supposedly is proven wrong by their report. I am highly skeptical. You have got to like this one.
Myth: THE GOVERNMENT LET A DRUG SMUGGLER GO FREE
Reality: My office would have much preferred to see Aldrete convicted and sent to prison for his crimes. We are in the business of putting guys like Aldrete behind bars. In fact, this office leads the nation in the number of drug smuggling cases we prosecute. Because the agents could not identify him, found no fingerprints, could not tie him to the van and did not apprehend him after shooting him, the case against Aldrete could not be proven.
Let me get this right. The agents stop the van. The man gets out…. some of this gets hairy on the details… runs and is shot at. In the act of shooting they wing him in the backside. Now they get his “truthful testimony” as they put it in regards to the incident. They can tie it to the agents shooting him but not to the van loaded with drugs. What am I missing here.

Everything Sutton claims is through the voice of the smuggler. The trial was the same way…no evidence other than what the smuggler said. Did the smuggler have a gun? Ramos & Compean state yes, the smuggler says no. There was nobody else to see if he was armed or not…so lets take the smugglers word for it. It was Sutton who added the mandatory 10 year sentence onto their convictions…not the jury. He didn’t have to charge them that way.
