It all started with this… an opportunity to just talk about it. It appears that Mayor Berger and current President John Nixon are behind this effort. The following is from a year ago… but a new vote is due next Monday.

LIMA, Ohio – As reported by the Lima News: “Opponents of a Lima casino made their voices heard loud and clear, but Lima City Council opted to move forward with an agreement anyway.

“Some 100 people came to Lima City Council’s meeting on Monday, many waving signs against having a casino in Lima.

“Council’s 5-4 vote held for a third reading Monday night, committing the city to a non-binding memorandum of understanding with the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. While the agreement is designed to provide a template for further negotiations with a tribe, it drew everything from prayers for the voting members to accusations of a vote ‘no to God.’ …”

It seemed to go away after awhile. But now it is coming to a vote on Monday. AP Roundtable has this.

Please call and express your opinion about City Council and the Mayor trying to cut a deal in Court to open a tribal casino in Lima, Ohio.

Here is their contact information: Mayor David Berger:

This action is unprecedented and a clear abuse of the intention of the 1988 Indian Gaming and Regulatory Act passed by Congress. Since 1990, voters in the Lima area have voted against casino gambling three times in statewide ballot issues. If the Mayor and City Council give this land in question to the Eastern Shawnee tribe, it will be handed over to the federal government and placed in legal trust for the tribe, which functions as a sovereign nation. This land cannot be recovered by the City of Lima or the State of Ohio — it is gone and so it most of the control over what happens on that land.

I have just talked to a member of City Council and it appears that not only is the Mayor in favor of it… so is City Council President John Nixon who was just appointed. Nixon is running as a Republican but seems to be more of the Voinovich… DeWine and Oxley branch than a Willamowski, Jordan or Faber. Ray Magnus who is running for City Council President is not opposed to gambling but is opposed to the casino for a number of good reasons. He believes that the long term effect on the surrounding area by an Indian Casio will be devastating.

Unless something changes the Council may cede a part of the city to a Sovereign nation.

You religious do gooders don’t know what the hell you are talking about. Lima needs the revenue. I was the meeting, whereas, every religious kook cited the bible and every president from George Washington up. One stated there wasn’t an unemployment problem in Lima. “There used to be lines for food stamps, but not any longer.” Well, this misinformed person is unaware that food stamps are no longer issued. OHIO DIRECTION plastic cards are issued and used similarly to a credit card and renewed monthly automatically. There is crime, excessive crime, here in Lima due to the unemployment. Yes, the religious right was present and only two of the SILENT MAJORITY. I repeat SILENT MAJORITY. The majority who vote people into office. I inquired as to the alternative to the Casino for needed revenue and got no response. Ohio has the lottery. That’s gambling. Ohio has race tracks. That’s gambling. The Elks have a drawing for money, now up to $10,000. That’s gambling. Buses leave Eastgate on a weekly basis taking people to Indiana and Michigan to play gaming machines. That is lost revenue. I left Lima and lived in California, 22 years this last time. Las Vegas was a monthly or bimonthly venture. It was fun. Sometimes I won and sometimes I lost. The live shows were fantastic. Security is plentiful. No prostitution around any of the Casinos. There are prostitutes all around Lima, around Kibby street, on Robb avenue, everywhere. Wake up. Perhaps Lima can get the needed revenue by taxing the churches. What a wonderful idea. I recall Reverand Cannon at the Lima BaptistTemple, tried to push his ideals and morals on Lima. His son was killed on a motorcyle, while high on drugs. He couldn’t run his own family and was trying to make everyone in Lima, donate money to his church so he could harass honest people. I’m agnostic and have met too many phony religious zealots. Marjoe Gortner, the child evangelist, told how phony religion was. ORAL ROBERTS, in Flint, Michigan supposedly healed people. The stagehands had to put the empty wheelchairs on a van to go to the next city where the same people would be healed again. Yes, tax the damned churches. I suggest you read GOD IS NOT GREAT. It is mentioned in the September issue of VANITY FAIR. The SILENT MAJORITY are not so silent anymore. I also suggest you do a web search for crime statistics for Lima, Ohio. You will be amazed!

In a letter to the editor in the Lima News, a woman from Kalida said that in Atlantic City teenagers are gambling. She cited, from some “unknown source” that said some teenagers had become addicted to gambing.
Well, I have been to many Casinos. You must be 21 to gamble. Las Vegas has separate areas where children can enjoy rides and play games on machines “but they are not allowed inside the gambling casinos.” I just talked to a friend in Florida, who has been there (Atlantic City), with her husband several times. They said they never saw any children. Many persons seem to be playing scare tactics to prevent a Casino from opening near Lima. If you don’t like to gamble, don’t go. I’ll bet (smile) that if the Casino gets built, all of these so called goodie goodie people, will be customers. Even one woman at the council meeting, who opposes the Casino said she had been to a Casino before. I said well, there are lottery tickets being sold in stores and every gas station in town. That is gambling. There are race tracks in Ohio. That is gambling. There are Bingo games around town, including in some churches. That’s gambling. The Elks club has a drawing which is up to $10,000. That’s gambling. With the unemployemt rate for Lima being so high, just going downtown is a Gamble. And the poor don’t have enough money to gamble with. They are just eking out an existence. Lima needs jobs. And the city needs revenue. What is the alternative to a Casino? When I asked this question at the meeting, prior to the actual meeting, there was no response. Put the initiative on the ballet. Let all of the people in Lima decide, not just the religious right, who are wrong on this issue. Lima has eroded the past 25 years. It needs new life. When children gradualte, they seem to be leaving Lima to go to places where they can get a decent job.. Too many businesses are leaving for Mexico. Wake up people. A Casino can benefit Lima. Why give the revenue to some other nearby town or city?

Sorry, I erred in the two posts.

    1. I was “at” the meeting (second sentence) first post.

    2. When children graduate, not gradualte.

Haste makes waste. To error is human, to forgive divine.

GET THE CASINO INITIATIVE ON THE BALLET!!!

  4. WILLIAM DAKOTA on August 23, 2007 4:57 pm

Perhaps the Lima City Charter will allow write in votes on the ballet for the Casino? Just asking!
