Strickland Assures Ohio As More Stolen Data leaks out
July 12, 2007 |
Man. If there was ever a cover-up this has to be it. They held off on the second set of information to be stolen… then they told us. Then there was a previous stolen item with data on it and then they told us. Now a third. Just how much is actually stolen and can we ever trust this Governor to be straight with the people. There is no excuse. If he was at fault… get to it. If not… then at least he could have been honest to us. BUT… noooooo….
The names and Social Security numbers of a half million more Ohio taxpayers were on a computer storage device stolen from a state intern last month, more than tripling the number previously reported, Gov. Ted Strickland said Wednesday.
Information on 561,126 additional taxpayers with uncashed state income refund checks has been located in the state’s continuing review of the device. That brings the total number of those taxpayers with information on the device to more than 786,000, Strickland said.
However, Strickland continued to emphasize that there is no evidence the information has been accessed, following its theft June 10 from a state intern’s unlocked car.
Extracting the data on the device would require a high degree of knowledge and specialized equipment, he said.
Three cases of identity theft were reported to the State Highway Patrol, but investigators concluded that the cases were not connected to storage device theft, Col. Richard Collins said. He did not say how that was determined.
Feel secure? Not exactly. And you shouldn’t. I can’t believe I almost miss Taft.
