Mike Huckabee Wins Value Voters Straw Poll

Posted by Mark On October - 23 - 2007

I like Mike. He communicates well. He is principled. He holds many of the same values I do. Mike Huckabee has the real potential to be a top tier candidate. Like the other bloggers here at Conservative Culture I believe that if he doesn’t have the top spot he should get the second spot. His views on limited government, second amendment rights and abortion reveal more about him on many topics.

Yet Reformed Chicks Blabbing show the lack of many Conservative leaning Christians to put their weight behind such a man. Instead they appear more worried about Rudy at this point and then threaten to pull out for a third party candidate. This was not only ill timed but makes us look dumber than a box of rocks. There is a solid candidate (as one can possibly be) in Mike Huckabee. I would like to see the major Christian talking heads to come out and speak up about the good things they see in Mike. For it is still too early to “count him out” of this race. IN fact each debate just seems to improve his image. But it appears I am a lone voice so far. If you feel the same way… chime in and don’t wait too long.

[Reformed Chicks Blabbing] The Arlington group has decided that there really is no clear choice of who to vote for:

Several conservative leaders yesterday concluded that none of the principal Republican presidential hopefuls deserves their support, not even Mike Huckabee, a Southern Baptist minister.

“There was no consensus on candidates, no agreement, period,” a participant confided after the meeting, held at the Washington Hilton one day after several of their groups participated in a “Values Voters” summit at that hotel.

Then, referring to Mr. Huckabee, he said, “He’s finished, I think. Bad things will be coming out about him,” referring to long-standing accusations surrounding Mr. Huckabee’s clemency for a rapist who later murdered someone in another state.

[...]

One major figure on the Christian Right who was considered a behind-the-scenes backer of former Tennessee Gov. Fred Thompson, said at yesterday’s closed-door session that he simply didn’t think any of the major Republican hopefuls could pass “the straight-face test” when it comes to commitment to Christian principles.

[...]

At a meeting of social-conservative leaders hours later Saturday, a consensus could not be reached on which of the top five Republicans to support for the Republican nomination. Mr. Huckabee garnered the most support among the two dozen leaders at that closed-door meeting.

What the heck is up with these Christians that they refuse to support someone who shares their values? Isn’t it supposed to be about principle not pragmatism? Why wasn’t the support stronger for Huckabee?

I’m not ready to support a third party candidate. I was just reporting that Dobson, et al. were talking about a third party. I’m actually supporting a conservative candidate who best reflects my principles: Fred Thompson. He’s a federalist and so am I. Mike Huckabee is not. Huckabee is my number two.

After talking to Mark prior to the article being writtien I know he was more concerned about Dr. Dobson’s remarks. Though we respect Dr. Dobsom and his work it was disappointing to have the third candidate threat pulled out so soon and in such a critical race.

Mike Huckabee has deep hard core principles, credibility, authenticity, and consistency! Mike is not like the dope that came from Hope~ He is our hope from HOPE! Mike has been in the service of working for the people in Arkansas for over 13 years. Time mag. called him one of the best Gov.in America. He bal. the budget each year. Used tobacco lawsuits monies to better health care. He also CUT taxes and fees almost 100 times. Saved taxpayers almost 380 MILLION and left a SURPLUS of nearly 850 MILLION!! He started a hot line to report tips on corruption. He has leadership quality, experience with working with democrats, and never forgetting where he came from. GO MIKE!!

I like Mike OK, but as a conservative Christian from Arkansas, I will not be supporting my former Governor, in the Republican primary unless it’s already narrowed down to picking between Huck and Rudy or Huck and McCain. His Christian social values are rock-solid, but his other policies dealing with illegal immigration, other crimes, and taxes as our governor for those 10 years was lackluster in some areas and totally disagreeable in others. He’s not as conservative with domestic policy issues as he is with values-oriented social issues or national security/ foreign policy.

There is a candidate that is solid all the way around with a couple of minor exceptions and that is Fred Thompson. My only problems with Fred are his support of McCain/ Feingold (which he has now says is not working and should be re-written) and his not voting for one of the articles of impeachment of Slick Willy. He’s strong on domestic policy, foreign policy, and social values that are important to conservatives and Christians. I will support him in the Arkansas Republican primary if he’s still in the race.

While I have a lot of respect for Dr. Dobson and the work he does, I believe it would be a grave mistake to insert a 3rd party candidate into the mix. We can’t as a nation afford to be “Peroted” into another Clinton presidency. To think about the possibility of 4 years of Sillary as the prez makes me sick in my stomach.

    Go Fred!
