Carnival of Ohio Politics #91

Welcome to the U Can’t Touch This version of the Carnival of Ohio Politics - that’s Issue #91 from 11/8/91.

I like the theme of U Can’t Touch This because of how untouchable some politicians seem to be or try to be. One thing is for sure - u can’t touch this Carnival of Ohio Politics with a version from any other state. We definitely have an untouchable compendium of bloggers around here.

Sex Diseases Rising - Media Doesn’t Get It

Posted by Conservative Splinter On November - 14 - 2007

Chlamydia, not AIDS, is the number one problem right now. Other diseases are on the rise according to the CDC. They believe almost 3 million new cases of Chlamydia annually while over 1 million was reported. Either way that means a growing percentage is infected in the United States. If multiple partners continues to be the norm then these figures could be somewhat exponential.

Dating used to be something one didn’t have to fear of. Today it’s like walking through a mine field. Morality isn’t the problem… at least according to this story. It’s the lack of health care. Isn’t health care what you get after you get something?

[New York Times] The incidence of gonorrhea, which had declined sharply, has risen in the last two years in this country while the number of chlamydia and syphilis cases continue to rise, federal health officials said yesterday.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the two most common diseases among those doctors must report in the United States. And the 1,030,911 cases of chlamydia in 2006 are the highest ever recorded for any nationally reported disease in any year, the officials said in releasing their annual report on sexually transmitted diseases. They said that because of underreporting, a more accurate estimate is 2.8 million new chlamydia cases annually.

About 19 million new cases of all kinds of sexually transmitted diseases occur in this country each year, but only the three are nationally reported. Genital herpes, papillomavirus and trichomonas infections account for the vast majority of cases, but doctors are not required to report them nationally.

Different reasons account for the rise of each of the three reportable and curable diseases, and for each a different approach is needed to reduce its incidence, Dr. John M. Douglas Jr., head of the division of sexually transmitted diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told reporters by telephone.

The three reported sexually transmitted diseases affect African-Americans disproportionately. The black to white ratios are gonorrhea 18 to 1, syphilis 6 to 1 and chlamydia 8 to 1, Dr. Douglas said in an interview. The reasons for the disparities are not clear. Lack of access to health care may be one problem.

Hillary the Best “Equipped” for Gay Rights

Posted by Conservative Splinter On November - 14 - 2007

I didn’t choose the wording. We agree that Clinton would be the best supporter of gay marriage rights. Perhaps she could divorce Bill and announce solidarity with the movement and marry another woman in one of the “free” states.

[YahooNews.com] The Nation — Both openly-gay members of Congress have now endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The New York senator secured the support of Tammy Baldwin, the Wisconsin congresswoman who is the only out lesbian in the House, months ago. And this week Clinton gained the enthusiastic endorsement of House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank, the only out gay man currently serving in the chamber.

Frank specifically hailed Clinton’s support for gay and lesbian rights in announcing his decision to back the woman who current leads in national polling on the Democratic race and who is the front-runner in most early caucus and primary states.

The Massachusetts Democrat said that he is “convinced that Hillary Clinton is the candidate best equipped to pass laws that will treat all Americans with dignity, fairness and equality no matter who they are or who they love.”

That comment came as part of a particularly warm embrace of Clinton by Frank, who has traditionally been one of the party’s most determined and effective campaigners among liberals in Massachusetts and other states.

“I have from the beginning of this campaign believed that Hillary Clinton was the candidate best qualified to serve as president,” the congressman explained. “I am convinced that once elected, the qualities she will bring to the job — commitment, intellect and political skills — will make her an extremely effective leader in our effort to reverse the badly flawed course on which George Bush and past Republican Congresses have set this country.”

Minnesota - How one attacker could avoid hate crime

Posted by Conservative Culture On November - 14 - 2007

One attacker could have avoided a tougher crime sentence. Just keep yelling “I love you, I love you” to keep at bay the hate crime activists. You know its a worse crime to hate someone than it is to actually try to stab them.

[WCCO.com] ST. PAUL (AP) St. Paul police called a knife attack on a African immigrant woman at a bus stop a hate crime because the suspect first yelled racial slurs in the victim’s face.

The attack happened about 8 p.m. Monday. The victim was cut on her chin, but was not seriously hurt. Police determined on Tuesday that the attack was racially motivated.

A witness told police where the suspect lived. A 49-year-old man was arrested Monday on suspicion of felony assault, a police report said.

Kickbutt Christian Endorses Huckabee

Posted by Conservative Culture On November - 14 - 2007

If Chuck Norris showed up at your door and told you to vote for someone… would you do it? This email came and of course we are happy to endorse Chuck’s endorsement of Huckabee.

Fact: Mike Huckabee is my choice for President of the United States.

While I like and know many of the Republicans running for President, Mike Huckabee is the best person for the job.

Mike hasn’t lived an isolated, out-of-touch life like so many politicians. He was raised by his Dad who was a firefighter and always had a second job to make ends meet. Mike and his sister grew up poor, not privileged. Mike worked two jobs in college and graduated in two-and-a-half years. He is an outdoorsman too – an avid fisherman, hunter and a long-time member of the NRA.

Mike is a committed husband and father. He has always prioritized his family before politics. His wife, two sons and daughter speak his highest praise.

Mike has a heart for helping others and will fight for the causes of the citizens of this country. He is known for having a compassionate heart, such as helping a young wife endure the trials of spinal cancer to aiding the victims of Hurricane Katrina as the governor of Arkansas. Mike genuinely cares for all people and I mean ALL!

Mike doesn’t abandon his values for what’s expedient. Like our Founding Fathers, he’s not afraid to stand up for a Creator and against secularist beliefs. At the same time, he doesn’t fear offending Christian leaders who give up their values in pursuit of electing their “team leader” just like everyone else.

Fact: Mike Huckabee needs our help.

The first thing I need you to do today is make a contribution in support of Mike Huckabee’s campaign. Whether you contribute $1(a buck for Huck!), $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, $100, $500, $1,000 or the maximum contribution of $2,300, Mike’s campaign has a proven track record of investing it wisely.

The second thing I need you to do today is ask at least one friend to make a contribution to Mike’s campaign. If everyone reading this email picked up the phone or sent out an email to their friends and asked them to make a contribution to Mike’s campaign and then followed up with them to make certain they had, Mike Huckabee will have enough money to win. Mike has already proven that he doesn’t need to raise a lot of money to be successful but we need to make certain we help him hit his fundraising goals. Everyone needs to dig deeper in support of Mike.

The third and final thing I need you to do today is to tell your friends and family members that aren’t able to contribute at this time to Mike’s campaign to at least sign up for his email updates. Mike’s stand on the issues is thoughtful and considered. He is truly the best candidate running for President and someone I think everyone should support.

Fact: Working together on Mike’s behalf we can make a great difference.

Make your contribution in support of Mike’s campaign today, ask at least one friend to do so also and then encourage your friends and family to sign up for Mike’s email updates.

Let me close by saying I recently had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with Governor Huckabee and I can say with complete certainty that Mike is mentally and physically up to the challenge. Over the next two months he is going to need our help to win this race. I will check back with you again in a few weeks to tell you a little more about why I am supporting Mike Huckabee. In the meantime, help me support him today with a contribution of whatever amount you can afford. I am doing the three things I am asking you to do, so please do the same.

Thank you for your time and your support of Mike Huckabee.

Chuck Norris
