Grieving Father Turns to Gun Control: But School To Blame
January 11, 2008 |
It is a tragic loss for the family. Yet the resulting logic he wrote in an article is one reason American’s no longer reason through the argument and the reality. The family lost their son at Virginia Tech where he taught. Instead of seeing the event as a reason gun free zones are really “free fire” zones for criminals and the unstable this father sees the needs to clamp down, not lighten up.
[AJC/opinion: pic and content] I served in the military, and my father hunted. I do not wish to confiscate any decent citizen’s gun. But soon Georgia lawmakers will debate two bills that, if passed, would steeply undermine public safety.
House Bill 89 would let workers tote guns to corporate parking lots in their vehicles. HB 915, the “Second Amendment Protection Act,” would authorize guns at volatile venues like ballgames, political rallies, bars, and postsecondary schools. (I would not teach at such a school.)
The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, dubiously misinterpreted and idolized, does not prohibit states from restricting firearms subject to criminal misuse or from denying guns to persons unfit to possess them.
The reasoning makes it sound as if more people legally have guns to defend themselves against criminals that this makes everyone safe. Some how the liberal mind sees a gun in the hands of a citizen as untrustworthy and the state should do whatever it takes to remove guns from everyone but the state. Sure, we recognize that the mentally unstable don’t have a right to guns. But gun laws only work for the law abiding. They do not protect anyone from a person bent on killing.
More directly and to the point. The only reason there were 30 plus deaths is that carry conceal permit holders that were on campus were not permitted but forcd to disarm before coming to campus. A bill in 2006 prior to the shooting was introduced and was intending to allow carry conceal permit holders to carry on campus was “shot down” by the university. The bill died in subcommittee. With it died over 30 students in the name of “safe zones”.
If you want a real picture of the tragic loss you may view the pictures and profiles of the victims. Over 30 reasons why Gun Control DOES NOT WORK and the reason law abiding citizens need the ability to defend themselves from mass shooters like the one that terrorized a gun free zone.

I am so sorry for your loss and admire your strength in the aftermath. I hope you and your family are able to make the changes you feel so that his loss of life will not go unnoticed and his families strength and his memory will live on. My thoughts are with you along with my prayers. I pray that if anything this tragic happens to one of my children I will have the strength that you do. Bless you and good luck.
First off, I am so sorry for your loss. But you have touched on a very central topic in today’s world, gun control. I think your story brings a personal side out to the debate that usually gets left by the wayside.
