Not Much Chance for LCC Prison

Posted by Conservative Culture On March - 6 - 2008

Stickland made it know 1 month prior to the election that LCC was a top priority. Well, it was just another empty promise. Now it appears that it won’t ever open. Will it be torn down to make room for a new prison. Even that would be good as the prison population needs more room and Lima needs jobs.

LIMA - There is almost no chance Lima Correctional Institution will reopen. Now the question is what can happen next.
Members of the Lima Correctional Institution Study Committee passed a recommendation Thursday accepting a study that basically rejects the idea of reopening the long-shuttered prison. The move came after a report from the consultants brought in to study the prison that said the cost or remodeling the facility would be prohibitive.

“Lima would be very, very difficult, even with the infusion of millions and millions of dollars, to bring up to today’s standards,” said Allen Beck, a project consultant with Heery Consultants, the group hired to oversee the feasibility study. “It would be a waste of precious money that could be better used.”

According to the Heery study, it would cost close to $180 million to renovate the Lima prison to full use. That compares to $229 million to build a new, state of the art facility and $8 million to demolish the concrete and steel structure. And even if the money were available to bring the prison up to code, it would be a step backwards for corrections, consultant Nancy Insco told the committee.
“To reopen Lima, in my opinion, would be to return to the dark ages of correctional management,” Insco said. “It’s really a dream that should probably be quashed.”
