It had to come out. Bishop Thomas Gumbleton broke 60 years of silence about sexual abuse in the Catholic church. Thomas himself was a victim at the hands of a priest.
He is the Detroit’s Auxiliary Bishop and he hopes to convince Ohio lawmakers that other victims deserve a chance in court. Of course this came as a surprise to the Roman Catholic leaders when he showed up to testify in Columbus.
Rep. John Willamowski, a Lima Republican and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, called Gumbleton a “profile in courage,” but he was unsure if his support would boost the bill.
There are still strong opponents to the bill to allow victims to come forward. At least one leader came forward to promote the truth instead of being concerned about the ‘finacial pursuits’ of the church.
