Strickland’s First Tax Hike

by Conservative Culture on February 22, 2007

No one would call it a tax hike. Just me and perhaps some other conservatives. In my world anything the government does to increase revenue is a tax hike because it takes more money from the taxpayer and gives it to the government. Here is Strickland’s new gas tax. It will generate $9 million in surplus plus the other money originally designated for the OSHP.

With the Ohio State Highway Patrol set to lose millions of dollars a year in fuel taxes this summer, Gov. Ted Strickland said today that he will reduce the amount of fuel that gas stations can write off as having evaporated.

Strickland said the move will generate $38 million a year, more than covering the $29 million that the patrol was expecting to lose from the phase-out of its share of Ohio’s fuel tax.

Closing the tax loophole to gas dealersĀ could bump up gas prices slightly.
