In the midst of all the concessions toward Muslims in the UK this one really caught me by surprise. A school deems it inappropriate for a girl to wear a sign of commitment to remain pure until marriage. And you wonder why the jihadists call the west immoral?
LONDON – At a time of passionate debate over religious clothing and emblems, a 16-year-old British Christian sued her school Friday for the right to wear a so-called purity ring symbolizing her commitment to pre-marital chastity.
Lydia Playfoot said her school at Horsham, south of London, had forbidden her from wearing the ring, saying it broke the school’s rules on jewelry.
Playfoot argued that the prohibition breached her right to express a religious belief. Not only that, she said in a statement to the court, fellow Sikh and Muslim pupils were permitted distinctive dress to show their religious identity, while she was not.
The bogus explaination for the school’s actions are given in the Telegraph here.
Jonathan Auburn, appearing for the school governors, argued there had been no interference with Miss Playfoot’s fundamental religious rights as wearing the purity ring did not involve “a manifestation” of her Christian belief. Even if there was interference with her rights, it was “justified and proportionate”, given the legitimate aim of the uniform policy – “the promotion of allegiance, discipline, cohesion and equality within the school”, he said.
It has generated a lot of conversation on the article here but the girl makes some good points.
She added: “Students have been allowed to wear nose rings, ear rings, tongue studs, badges and have dyed hair.”
She claimed that the uniform policy was not consistently enforced.
But Leon Nettley, the headmaster, denied there had been any discrimination, saying that the purity ring was not a Christian symbol, and not required to be worn.
One would think that any reminder of moral standards would be of benefit to the school and society but instead the decline of the western values is apparently ok with the administration.

i think girls (and guys) should speak their mind in what they believe in. if they want to wear a ring to show they are waiting or saving sex until marriage, LET THEM! thats basically tellin them to take their ring off, or go off and have sex.
