Columbus, Ohio (August 6, 2007) – On Monday Vets for Freedom, a non-partisan organization of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, launched its Ohio chapter to educate Members of Congress and fellow citizens about the need to support the U.S. mission in Iraq.
Vets for Freedom’s grassroots effort in Ohio is a direct challenge to MoveOn.org’s “Iraq Summer,†which depends on the deployment of political activists from Washington, DC. The Ohio leadership team will organize and mobilize local Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to ensure members of Congress know that most soldiers and Marines want to finish their mission in Iraq.
Lt. Lee Crognale will serve at the Ohio State Chair. He will be supported by state Captain Nathan Martin organizing veterans from around Ohio. “We have a lot of organizing ahead of us†said Crognale. “But we bring boots on the ground knowledge that is difficult to ignore or brush aside. Veterans know how important success is – that’s why we’re standing up today.â€
“As our Senators and Representatives return to their home states for August, Iraq veterans will be organizing and standing up across the country to make our pro-mission, pro-victory voices heard,†said Pete Hegseth executive director of Vets for Freedom. Hegseth served with the 101st Airborne in Baghdad and Samarra in 2005-2006. “These Ohio vets know first-hand the need to fight and defeat al-Qaeda in Iraq and they understand the devastating consequences of an early surrender.â€
