A Drug Dealer get as plea agreement. An officer is charged. A drug dealer’s girlfriend is dead. All the makings of a suspense drama. Except in this case it’s real life in Lima. Unfortunately someone died in the raid but it appears that the lesson is that officer’s lives are on the line and when something goes wrong you can go after them. No one wants to talk about the choices people in the community are making by living (with their children) with drug dealers and gang bangers. It’s all seen as “normal”. Everyone talked about the woman’s change of life and her bright future. Who would consider living with a drug dealer a bright future? Now there is no future and they want to target the officer.
LIMA — A solemn, silent Lima police officer learned on Thursday when he’ll stand trial on charges stemming from the January shooting death of a 26-year-old woman.
Sgt. Joseph Chavalia, flanked by a pair of attorneys, learned his trial on charges of negligent homicide and negligent assault is set to begin July 28. The date was set during Chavalia’s second appearance in an Allen County courtroom in the case.
Chavalia is the officer who shot and killed Tarika Wilson during a January drug raid. Wilson’s 1-year-old son, Sincere, was also shot and wounded. Wilson’s boyfriend, Anthony Terry, was the subject of the raid.
Terry pleaded guilty to trafficking in crack cocaine, two counts of trafficking in marijuana, and two counts of permitting drug abuse during a hearing March 31. A sentencing date has not been set.
In exchange for the plea, prosecutors dropped eight other drug charges against Terry and agreed to not pursue additional charges for anything that was found inside the home at 218 E. Third St. during the Jan. 4 raid.
Wearing a dark suit with a red tie, Chavalia remained silent except for a brief one-word answer to visiting Judge Richard Knepper with a simple, “Yes.”
